I was born and raised in Pulaski, VA, to Joseph and Joyce Slaughter. I am the second born of three children. I have an older sister named Michele and a younger brother named Joseph, Jr. Growing up my siblings and I were very close, however, there was some sibling rivalry. I was blessed enough to grow up with most of my extended family living in the same area. I enjoyed many regular family get togethers and had the opportunity to gleam from the wisdom of the older “saints” in my family. I was born into a very religious family and being actively involved in church became a lifestyle at a very early age. At the age of 13, I became a Christian and have been serving God every since that day.
During my childhood, I was very active in school. I participated in many clubs and organizations including choir, band, drama, track, and cheerleading. I did well academically because not doing so was a big deal with my parents. When it came time to decide to go to college I knew that I wanted to be far enough away that my family could not just show up, but close enough to get to them in one day, if necessary.
Old Dominion University became my home for several years. When I first arrived, I was overwhelmed by the size of the campus and the number of people there. I came to ODU with the intent to study Pre-med, however, Counseling and Psychology became my passion, and in 2003, I received my Bachelor’s in Human Services Counseling with a minor in Psychology. While there, I participated in Ebony Impact, and Women Leadership Studies.
Currently, I am working on a Master’s in Community Counseling at Regent University. On campus, I am currently serving as the 2007-2008 secretary for the Association of Black Psychologists and participating on the Praise and Worship team. I am employed with Compass Youth Services as an In-home counselor, and also do motivational speaking for teenaged girls and women. I am a member of New Life Providence Church where I am very active in the Praise, Worship and Arts ministry.
After I graduate from Regent University, I plan on attending law school in order to be an advocate for children and families who have no voice. I believe that I am called to speak and stand for those who are not able to do so for themselves.
The word can’t is not in my vocabulary and I believe that I can achieve anything that I set my mind to. I love to make people laugh when they want to cry. I love to spend my time with my friends and family every chance I get. I believe that everyday is a gift and I am responsible for what I do with that gift. I am a very compassionate, kind person who loves to sing, read, cook and perform dramatic expressions. I live to encourage others and to help them see and focus on their strengths not their deficits.
